DFG project: Maimonides' medical works

Management:

  • Prof. Dr. Gerrit Bos

Collaborators:

  • Dr. Recha Allgaier-Honal

Description:

Despite the increased interest of researchers in the cultural history of the Jews in the Middle Ages in recent decades, there are still areas that have been neglected. Among the disciplines that are particularly affected by this regrettable neglect in the field of Jewish studies is clearly the history of medieval Jewish medicine. There is still a lack of the most basic tools for its scientific research.

In order to fundamentally improve this situation, a project has been initiated with the aim of critically publishing the following medical works by Maimonides:

    On Asthma (in 2 volumes);

    Medical Aphorisms (in 5 volumes);

    Commentary on Hippocrates' aphorisms,

    Poisons and their cure;

    On hemorrhoids;

    On sexual intercourse;

    On the instructions for maintaining health and

    On the explanation of some symptoms and the reaction to them.

The series is edited by Dr. Daniel C. Peterson and Dr. Morgan Davis at Brigham Young University Press, Provo, UT.
