Course content

Graduates of the degree program acquire a well-founded and broad basic knowledge of Jewish tradition and in-depth specialist knowledge of pre-modern or modern Jewish history and culture. Modern Hebrew is taught over the entire three years of the degree program; other language levels of Hebrew are also offered. In addition, the basic modules provide an introduction to academic work and the advanced modules enable students to practise independent research and development of topics. Optional supplementary modules include the possibility of an internship or recognition of academic achievements abroad.

Course structure

The Jewish Studies degree program is offered as a two-subject Bachelor's degree. It is combined with another degree course at the Faculty of Arts. The course is divided into basic modules, advanced modules and extension modules. A specified number of credit points as well as coursework and examinations must be completed in each module.

In the first year of study, the basic modules introduce students to Judaism in historical depth and thematic breadth. The advanced modules allow students to deepen their knowledge of pre-modern and modern Jewish studies and to focus more closely on one of these areas. A seminar from a related subject area (e.g. general history, philosophy, regional studies, Eastern Europe, Islamic studies, theater studies) can also be taken as a supplementary module. In addition, an internship or a stay abroad can be completed in the supplementary module. Hebrew courses are an integral part of the degree program. Further information can be found in the module handbook.
